Google is a multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products. These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, software, and hardware. Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University in California. Together, they own about 14 percent of their shares and control 56 percent of the stockholder voting power through supervoting stock. They incorporated Google as a privately held company on September 4, 1998. An initial public offering (IPO) took place on August 19, 2004, and Google moved to its headquarters in Mountain View, California, nicknamed the Googleplex. In 2017, Google announced plans to reorganize its various interests as a holding company called Alphabet Inc. This move created a new holding company for Google called Alphabet and separated out the projects into different entities like “Google,” “Calico,” “CapitalG,” and others. As of 2018, Google is a leading technology giant with over $800 billion market cap. It has made multiple acquisitions, notably YouTube, in 2006 for $1.65 billion. The company has also been battling antitrust concerns from the United States government and other countries worldwide.
